Decorative Soldering | 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Decorative soldering is a great way to add interest to any panel or to create those elements that may be difficult otherwise such as thorns on a rose. We will cover the techniques to accomplish 9 different techniques.  Students need to bring a board to work on in class.  To make the board the student will need to cut 7 pieces of any glass to the size of about 1.5” x 8”.  Foil all around each piece and solder them together side by side.  Do a flat solder seam on one side and a beaded solder seam on the other side.  Add a piece of zinc on one end for stability of the piece. Prerequisite: Foil Method Supplies needed: Students need to bring their soldering equipment, flux, and solder The solder board already made and ready to go. If the student has two irons, one for lead method and one for foil method, bring both irons. Bring a sharpie to write on the glass the name of the soldering technique. Get The Lead Out: Intermediate | 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Traditional Lead construction is the method of the masters.  Lead method is wonderful in larger windows, sidelights, and doors and is a great technique for geometric designs and straight lines.  During this class, you will construct an elegant window while learning the complete process of working with lead channel (came).  We will discuss the different types of lead came and in the end, you will “play in the mud” during the glazing process.  Prerequisite:  Tiffany Foil Method.    Students must have all glass cut, ground, and ready to assemble prior to class. Some Supplies Needed:  Please come in before class to get your pattern and supplies. This 4 day class is the next step to improving your skills learned in the Beginner Tiffany Foil Method.  In this class, you will learn: Working in the round, open backgrounds, or pieces that extend outside the edge. Basic pattern modification if needed Additional cutting methods-to include saw cuts Incorporating bevels into a piece Foiling and working with thick, rippled or heavy textured glass Additional soldering techniques to include limited reinforcement techniques as needed Wiring around edges and came bending Use of foil overlays and filigrees We recommend that you work on a piece that is larger than you have done before and that presents some of the challenges listed above that you have not yet experienced. Well I have never considered a jellyfish strikingly attractive until now.  These beautiful fused jellyfish will be a wonderful addition to any beach house or patio. The sound of the wind blowing through the tenacles are sure to help anyone relax after a long day.  We will show you how to add LED lights to make your jellyfish shimmer after dark. You will build on clear glass and use color embellishments to make this project your own.  Prerequisite: Cutting skills helpful but not required. We have been asked many times to offer our expertise on designing custom panels.  In this class, we will share lots of tips and techniques to make design elements more understandable.  When you are finished with the class you will be able to create a design for a specific size, using your own design elements or from other patterns, or pictures while using a variety of proper reinforcement techniques.  Our customers always tell us this class was well worth taking. “I learned so much from this class.  There was more to this than I expected and you made the process so easy.” In this class, done in three consecutive days,  we will only create the design.  Be prepared to come to class with an opening size and a general idea of what you might want as your focal. Advanced Pattern Making in Kiln-Formed Glass: An Investigation into Linear Symmetry with Ian Chadwi | 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Appreciate and enjoy the details of Advanced Pattern Making an Investigation into Linear Symmetry with artist Ian Chadwick. In this advanced course increase your awareness to the use of Symmetry, a fundamental design tool used by both man and nature, as a devise to bringing balance and harmony to a chaotic universe consequently attaining an aesthetic of order and familiarity. This class gives you the opportunity to connect this design technique to your glass work. In this 5-day course, under Ian’s direction while using Bullseye glass, you will create your own unique colored sheets of glass, increase your understanding of color, design, and composition while expanding your knowledge and experience of kiln-forming and cold-working techniques to create intricate mandala-like patterns which utilize symmetry and geometry to create individual hypnotizing works of art. Students will be guided step-by-step through the creation of Bullseye glass striped sheets which once fired will be deconstructed and reassembled. Discover how the arrangement of tone and color can vividly enhance the optical properties of your design and how to lay out the pattern using principles of four-fold and eight-fold symmetry. Utilizing these concepts and techniques you will create a 9” square glass tile of your own unique color and design. Prerequisite: Glass cutting skills.
